KAKULE, George. - GEORGE KAKULE, 84 - TROY - George W. Kakule, 84, of Westfall Avenue, died in the Samaritan Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Kakule was a lifelong Troy resident. He was a truck driver for the former Fitzgerald Brewing Co. for 29 years until it closed in 1962. He then worked for the Fitzgerald Brothers 7-Up Bottling Co. in Poestenkill and in the maintenance department in Samaritan Hospital for several years. He retired in 1974. Mr. Kakule was a World War II Army veteran and served in the European Theater. He was a former member of the Albany local of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. He was the widower of Jennie Smyth Kakule. Survivors include a brother, John Kakule of Largo, Fla., and a sister, Agness Ginnett of Selkirk. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Daniel D. Purcell Funeral Home, 510 Pawling Ave., and at 9:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday in the Funeral home. KELLOGG, Frances P. - Mrs. Frances P. Kellogg, vice-president of Parks and Parks, Inc., brush manufacturers of this city, died yesterday at the Wiltsey Nursing Home. Mrs. Kellogg, who also served as a member of the faculty at the Emma Willard School for a short time, was daughter of the late Rev. Stephen Parks, pastor of the former First Methodist Church of Lansingburgh and also of the State Street Methodist Church. Mrs. Kellogg was the widow of Francis P. Kellogg. She was born in Troy and was a lifelong resident of this city [Troy, NY]. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Lansingburgh. Mrs. Kellogg attended Emma Willard School and later returned to the school as a teacher on its faculty for a short period. She was a member of the Emma Willard Alumnae Association. She was also a member of the Thursday Morning Club and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Survivors include a nephew, several nieces and several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. KENNEY, James J., Brigadier General (Retired) - Hoosick Falls – Brigadier General (Ret.) James Joseph KENNEY, 83, of North Hoosick, NY, passed away peacefully Monday morning, July 25, 2011, at his residence with his loving wife at his bedside.Born in Hoosick Falls, NY, on December 6, 1927, he was the only son of the late James Simon KENNEY and Frances Mae MALEY. Jim married the love of his life, Leona JONES, on April 16, 1966, in Berlin, NY. 'Skins,' as he was known by his childhood friends, was a lifelong resident of Hoosick Falls. Active in the Boy Scouts of America as a youth, Jim was a man devoted to his family and his country starting at a very young age. At age 15, after a small fib regarding just how old he really was, he joined the New York Guard, starting a military career lasting over 45 years. A 1945 graduate of the former Walter A. Wood Memorial High School, Jim briefly attended Siena College. At age 17, with his father's assistance, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Rumor has it that it was weeks before his mother spoke to either of them after that. Honorably discharged from the US Navy in 1947, he enlisted as a Private in the National Guard three days later. Working for the State Division of Military and Naval Affairs in the Adjutant General's Office, he rose through the ranks to the level of Colonel. Between 1954 and 1977 he was the Assistant Director of Military Personnel and Administration and State Quartermaster responsible for 90 NYS armories and 11 air bases. He retired in 1977 from the New York Army National Guard and was later honored with a brevet promotion to Brigadier General. Jim then joined the Army Reserve, where he was assigned to a selective service unit as its commander. In addition to his military career, Jim also worked for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation for more than 54 years, dating back to 1955 until the State dissolved his position as a Special Game Protector in 2009. Jim's patrol covered Rensselaer County, but his favorite work detail was patrolling the Tomhannock Reservoir. Jim was a former Assessor for the Town of Hoosick, a member of the NYS Assessors Association, a member and former Board Member of the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad, and he served on the Town of Hoosick Planning Board for many years. Jim was a member of the BPO Elks, American Legion and National Rifle Association as well as a Life Member of the US National Guard Association. A devout Catholic, Jim was a lifelong communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Leona, his children, Stacy L. and husband Michael Flynn of Hoosick Falls, Lt. Col. Kathleen F. Curran of the Army Nurses Corps at Ft. Eustis in Yorktown, VA, and James J. Kenney II and wife Lori of Cambridge, NY. Grandchildren Jonah Slagen, Sarah Flynn, Lane and Riley Curran and Shamus Kenney were the joys of their Poppy's life. A Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial was celebrated on Friday, July 29, at 10 am at the Immaculate Conception Church, Main Street, Hoosick Falls. KEPNER, Hezekiah. - Hezekiah KEPNER, a well-known resident of Lansingburgh and a veteran of the Civil War, died yesterday afternoon at the residence, 551 Fourth Avenue, following an illness of two years. Mr. Kepner was born in Pennsylvania and enlisted August 18, 1861, in Company C., Forty-seventh Illinois infantry, serving until after the close of the war. He was wounded in the right leg at the battle of Corinth, Miss., October 3, 1862, after having been in several engagements. September 18, 1863, he was transferred to the Seventh Independent Company, Veteran Reserve Corps, and was assigned to duty with the Paymaster's Department. He served at New York and Albany until August 29, 1866, when he was mustered out. Mr. Kepner was with General Grant on his march through Mississippi in 1862. He moved in 1867 to Lansingburgh, where he resided until his death. He was a member of Post Holton, G.A.R., and had held several offices in the post, only a month ago having been elected Chaplain. He was also a member of the First Methodist Church. Mr. Kepner is survived by a widow; two sons, Frank KEPNER and Howard KEPNER of Lansingburgh; and two daughters, Mrs. Emily YOUNG of Altamont and Mrs. Albert WINDSOR of Lansingburgh. Post Bolton will have charge of the funeral services Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the house. Rev. J. Clark Simmons will officiate.
The funeral of Hezekiah Kepner was held this afternoon from the residence, 551 Fourth Avenue, and was largely attended. Rev. J. Clark Simmons officiated, and the services were in charge of Post Bolton, G.A.R., the members of which attended in a body. A. T. Seibert sang 'One Sweetly Solemn Thought' and 'Face to Face.' The members from the post accompanied the remains to the grave in the Waterford Rural Cemetery [in Saratoga County, NY]. At the grave, a firing squad from Camp King, Sons of Veterans, in charge of Commander Michael Sullivan, fired three volleys, and taps were sounded.... Mr. Kepner was born in Troy and had lived in this area all his life. He was treasurer of North Greenbush School District #4 and was a member of the First Reformed Church of Wynantskill. He served as elder, treasurer, and clerk of the consistory of the church and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy. He was a member oh the Wynantskill American Legion Post and the Geerhold Rebn VFW Post of Wynantskill. He had also been active in the Wynantskill Boy Scouts for many years. Kestner Sr., 75, a native Trojan who had been employed with the General Electric Co. in Schenectady for more than 43 years and risen to high positions, died yesterday at St. Clare's Hospital after a brief illness. At the time of his retirement ten years ago, Mr. Kestner was chief cost accountant and associated with the general manufacturing department at GE. He was a graduate of LaSalle Institute in Troy and had lived in Schenectady for 48 years. His home was at 204 Elmer Street. Mr. Kestner was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church and was a member of the General Electric Quarter Century Club and the Fourth degree Knights of Columbus. Surviving are his widow, the former Margaret Wilbert; two sons, Joseph A. Kestner Jr. of Troy and Ernest W. Kestner of West Springfield, Mass.; two sisters, Misses Dorothy and Theresa Kestner, both of Troy; and five grandchildren. KNIBBS, James. - The funeral of James Knibbs, late superintendent of the fire alarm telegraph system, was held this afternoon from the family residence of 34 Grand St., Rev. R. D. Williamson of the United Presbyterian Church officiating. The obsequies were largely attended, delegations from the Masonic bodies, the Odd Fellows and the Fire Department being present. There were beautiful floral tributes from friends and organizations. Apollo Commandery sent a facsimile of its badge. Mount Zion Lodge F. and A. M. gave a Masonic emblem floral piece. The Read Steamer Company presented a facsimile of its badge, and appropriate pieces [were] sent by Athenian Lodge and the Encampment. In addition to these pieces there were numerous floral tributes from many friends. The Empire Male Quartet, including Ben Franklin, Ed Humphrey, Fred C. Comstock and James Laing, sang at the house and at the grave. At the residence the selections were 'Lead Kindly Light' and 'Abide With Me'. At the grave the quartet sang in the Masonic burial service 'O Solemn Strikes the Funeral Chapel' and 'My Heavenly Home'. The bearers were Frank C. Morey and Melvin S. Marble, representing Mount Zion Lodge; Assistant Chief James H. Loyd and John N. Squires, representing the Fire Department; Charles F. Hilke and George L. Harger, representing Athenian Lodge; and W. W. Lee and George M. Payfer, representing the Encampment, I. O. O. F. The Masonic burial service was conducted at the grave in Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Mr. Master Anton R. Thompson. Delegations from the Masonic and Odd Fellows bodies and from the companies of the fire department were present at the grave. The members of the Arba Read Steamer Company, of which the deceased was an organizer and its first engineer, attend the funeral. At a meeting of the company last evening a committee was named to draft resolutions of respect. The captains of the Fire Department met and decided to send delegations from each company to the funeral. KNIBBS, James. - James Knibbs, Superintendent of the Troy (NY) fire alarm system and for many years engineer of the Arba Read Steamer Company in that city, died at his home there yesterday. He was stricken with paralysis a few days ago. Mr. Knibbs was born in England in 1828 and came to this country in 1840. He was twice married, his second wife surviving him. His only son died several years ago. Mr. Knibbs was very prominent in Masonic and Odd Fellows circles, but was best known throughout the country by his invention of what is known as the 'Knibbs Run Around'. This is an attachment to steam fire engines which prevents a waste of water and saves the hose and suction pipes. The 'Run Around' was utilized almost everywhere, and by the advice of counsel he brought suits against many municipalities. Many of the latter settled for large sums, but the City of New York defended the action. Recently a verdict was given in the United States court for nearly $1,000,000 in the favor of the persons to whom Mr. Knibbs assigned his invention. One of these is ex-collector of customs Thomas Murphy of New York. KOLB, John J., Sr. - RENSSELAER - John J. Kolb Sr., 96, of Harrison Avenue, died Sunday at the Anne Lee Home in Colonie. Born in Castleton, he was the widower of Sophie M. Buzzuski Kolb. Mr. Kolb was a master mechanic for 55 years for Tenly Livermore, Dick Smith and Denoyer Chevrolet in Colonie. A resident of Rensselaer since 1924, he was a communicant of St. John's Church for 76 years, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. Survivors include two sons, John J. Kolb Jr. of Rensselaer and William J. Kolb of Latham; a daughter, Mary Mooney of Albany; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 9 a. m. Thursday from the W. J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Ave., Rensselaer, and at 10 a. m. at St. John's Church. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. KYER, Harold - JOHNSONVILLE - Harold KYER, 86, of Northern Turnpike, longtime beloved companion of the late Barbara L. KETCHAM POST, died on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy [Rensselaer County, NY]. Born in West Hoosick [Rensselaer County, NY], he was a son of the late Lorens KYER and Harriet 'Haddie' JACOBS. He was educated in the Troy schools. Harold had been employed at Wiley Brothers Inc. in Schaghticoke for 26 years and then became a self-employed contractor, building homes. He also served as the building inspector for the Town of Pittstown for over 20 years, retiring in 1989. He was a longtime racecar driver back in the 1950s in the famous car P61, winning numerous events at the State Line and Rutland speedways. Harold enjoyed watching NASCAR and Yankees baseball, and spending hours in his garage fixing stuff and visiting with friends and family. Father of Sandra (Terry) MALONE of Schaghticoke, Donald (Judy) KYER of Saratoga Springs, Gary (Edna Morris) KYER of Saratoga Springs, William (Laura) KYER of Saratoga Springs, Nancy (Bob) COUSER of Schaghticoke, Lynn (Rick) BARTIS of Florida, Lori (Larny) CHAPKO of Valley Falls and James (Lisa) KYER of Melrose; brother of Marion GARRAHAN of Albany, Helen BROWNELL of West Hoosick and the late Lorens KYER. Also survived by 19 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his companion. He will be sadly missed by his very special friend Michelle HOAG-TIZ. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a. m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Schaghticoke. Per Harold's wishes, there are no calling hours.
