Ross Barkley cannot expect to walk back into Dean Smith's team when he returns action after injury, according to former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton.
The on-loan midfielder was in great form for Smith’s side prior to picking up a hamstring injury against Brighton in November.
Barkley is close to returning to action and could be available for Villa’s next Premier League outing against Tottenham on January 13.
Dean Smith said: 'He hasn't had enough minutes on the training ground but I fully expect him to be ready for our next Premier League game. I'm not sure if I'll start him in the FA Cup game [against Liverpool]. He needs more minutes on the training ground.
Given the excellent form of Villa’s midfielders, Hutton says Barkley could face a battle to get back into the side.
“How difficult a decision is that?,” said Hutton, reports Football Insider.
“It’s going to be really harsh if he comes straight back in and someone comes out.
“But there’s a lot of games coming up and a lot of boys who’ve had a lot of minutes, so you can slightly rotate.

“Do you take Traore out? Do you put El Ghazi to the right, Jack to the left, Barkley through the middle behind Watkins? That’s the only option which sticks out for me. But it’s very harsh.
“I think he has to stick with the same team at least until there’s a defeat. He’s going to have to wait.”
